Finally! FINIALS Finally!
“The finial is an architectural device, typically carved or turned in wood and employed decoratively to emphasize the apex of a gable or any of various distinctive ornaments at the top, end, or corner of a building or structure.” Architectural details were no strangers to tents. Many drawings, paintings and photographs show finials as a major aesthetic detail gracing the peaks of tents of all types and time periods. Smaller finials were used as decorative ornaments on the perimeter poles of marquees.
Not just to embellish the design, finials played a structural role also. Weather lines were attached to peak finials to facilitate the assembly and erecting process of the tent and to keep the lines from touching the tent roof. That separation keeps the lines from prematurely wearing the tent ridge fabric. In historic tents that separation kept the lines from breaking the surface tension of the fabric producing a spot for rain to pass to the interior.
Wikipedia even says “Architectural finials were once believed to act as a deterrent to witches on broomsticks attempting to land on one’s roof.” Really? That fact alone is enough reason for us to have a pair on the roof of the Tentsmiths’ marquee!
We are happy to tell everyone we have access to a new, awesome, reliable, skilled, historic finial maker. Handmade. One at a time. Did we say awesome? After discussions and drawings back and forth for over a year we finally have finials landed on the shop floor. They’re here! They’re beautiful.
You will please see in the accompanying photos we have three designs in our initial offering. The “Ball”, “Flame” (also called a spear) and “Acorn” are the most common design elements seen throughout the ages. The “Acorn” is offered in both a 4” diameter and a 5” diameter. The “Ball” and “Flame” are offered only in a 5” diameter version. All sizes are turned from laminated hardwood for stability in the weather. A 1/2” hole bored 3” deep in the bottom center of the finial facilitates placement on your pole pin. All finials must be painted with a good exterior paint or sealing system.
The 4” Finials are priced at $36 each or $69 for a pair.
The 5” Finials are priced at $50 each or $95 for a pair.
As you might imagine this was quite a chunk of $ to allow us to have a large enough stock to meet initial demand so we have limited our offering. In the not too distant future you will see all of the finial designs offered in both sizes, new smaller sizes and new styles.
If you’ve been waiting for us to get finials again, now is the time to jump in. If you’ve never had a finial on your tent you’ll be very impressed with how it simplifies rope management and the setup process. You will never regret adding finials to the peak(s) of your tent and it will add a huge amount to your pride of ownership.
